Recording "deforestation" and soil erosion

Santo Tomas, Naguilian

When I was young, there once was in the village of Baculud, Ilagan, Isabela, a flat land just before the steep riverbank. Vast enough to serve as an afternoon promenade just before sundown -- when there was a cool breeze triggered by the temperature difference of the river and the land. The children flew kites, launched paper airplanes or run around with whirling paper propellers;   while the elders watching the young converse about local happenings, national and world events.

On Saturdays, the women did the laundry just further North where the riverbank was barely inclined and filled with mixture of fine sand, pebbles and stones; perfect for drying the laundry after the wash.

From the flatlands just before the steep riverbank, I watched in awe as the older boys use the flatlands to run fast and then just before the precipice, stop and summersault to the deep of the river just below. I wish I were one of the older boys summersaulting, but my feet and legs were uncoordinated still to accomplish the feat.

But those were the joys of Summer.

When the monsoon rain came, the jagged upright banks, just before the flatland, were scoured by the rampaging force of the gathering flood waters coming from the the Sierra Madre mountains.

The photos here do not reveal vertical banks ravaged by the mighty Ilagan River; but the hills are still very steep on certain areas.
