Cadu Farms

Eugenio Magano Farm 01 (Cadu, Ilagan) EcoCulture Projects

Eugenio-Magano Farm 01 (Cadu, Ilagan) EcoCulture Projects
Eugenio-Magano Farm 01 (Cadu, Ilagan) EcoCulture Projects.

There is a great chance that the cyclical El Niño may happen this year (2014) -- a period of prolonged hot weather and scarcity rain that would likely lead to devastating drought. The EcoCulture projects proposed here are intended for tropical countries like the Philippines -- with defined rainy season and dry season, occurrence of several typhoons each year -- to address the following key issues:

  1. How to store in place, most (if not all) of the rainwater during the rainy season, for use later during the dry season, and especially during prolonged drought during the advent of El Niño.
  2. How to mitigate the devastating impact of flash floods, as a result of heavy rains during typhoons (compounded by massive deforestation).
  3. How to mitigate the impact of strong winds that accompany typhoons and storms that visit the Philippines several times each year.

Eugenio-Magano Farm 01 (Cadu, Ilagan) EcoCulture Projects : Canals and Local Irrigation System

Canals and Local Irrigation System
Eugenio-Magano Farm 01 (Cadu, Ilagan) EcoCulture Projects : Canals and Local Irrigation System.

For the ambitious "in place" Water Sequestration projects proposed here, the canals (shown as dark blue) serve as the catchment basins (like streams and rivers) for the rainwater that falls into or directed to the farm. Not shown here are the smaller canals that together with the major canals create a Local Irrigation System to direct and distribute the collected rainwater throughout the farm.

Gravity automatically transports collecting rainwater from higher levels to the lower levels. A mechanical pump will be used to direct water transport from lower levels to higher levels.

Cadu Farm 03 Projects : Water Sequestration Ponds

Cadu Farm 03 Projects : Water Sequestration Ponds
Cadu Farm 03 Projects : Water Sequestration Ponds. Three (3) water sequestration ponds (see Red arrows above) are proposed for Farm 03. The main water sequestration pond proposed will be located in Zone c, in the middle of Farm 03, while two other ponds will be located in Zone d.

The Water Sequestration Ponds (shown with arrows above) are among the proposed integrated Water Sequestration, Treatment, Recycling and Conservation projects:

  1. Water Sequestration Ponds (an overview presented in this article)
  2. Canals and Local Irrigation System (visit separate article)
  3. Locks and Organic Dams  (visit separate article)

The Water Sequestration, Treatment, Recycling and Conservation projects are among the foundation projects of the EcoCulture System to create a biodiverse and sustainable EcoCulture food production system from the existing Cadu Farms in Ilagan, Isabela.
